SCAM - a chap selling his artwork, door to door

We live in Loggerheads and have just been visited by a chap selling
his artwork, door to door. A quick look on the web and it seems that
identical oil paintings that the chap or his friends had supposedly
painted were available for $5.95 on the internet, on a Chinese
website, presumably produced en masse in Chinese sweat shops.
One, called Sand Hill on the website
(http://www.doupine.com/Storage/?Pageid=6&action=next) was supposedly
inspired by his girlfriend who was depicted in the picture as a
spoonful of honey, or a woman, depending which way up you viewed the
picture. What a scam.

He was charging £75.

Ragwort alert

That summer menace, ragwort, is blooming all over the country at the moment, so it is time to reiterate the importance of controlling it. As every horse owner and farmer knows, the weed contains toxins which can cause serious liver damage, bringing about debilitating or fatal consequences if eaten by horses and other grazing animals.

In the right place, and where there is no risk to animal welfare, ragwort plays an important role in the countryside; it supports a wide variety of invertebrates and is a major nectar source for many insects, but it must be controlled, especially where horses and livestock are present.

Land stewardship and animal husbandry are both huge responsibilities which are taken seriously by farmers and landowners, but it is important that the dangers posed by ragwort reach the widest possible audience.

By law, all Local Authorities and public bodies who own land must control their ragwort. Last summer, your concerns moved us to write to all Local Authorities, emphasising the importance of this issue and asking them their management policy for ragwort. We had an encouraging and positive response from Local Authorities, with many taking time to write to us again in April of this year to let us know that their spraying was underway, for which, full marks. If you feel, however, that there are landowners near you who are not tackling their ragwort, especially near livestock, by all means alert them to DEFRA's Code of Practice, which details how to recognise ragwort and how to control it.

The threat ragwort poses to animals cannot be underestimated and is something that, by law, all landowners, whether public or private, must take seriously. Read the Code of Practice on DEFRA's website.
