Harassment of an elderly lady in Loggerheads An unsolicited visit from two representatives of your company,
Compass Mobility Consultants Ltd.,
on Monday 14th June to my mother at Loggerheads has caused her considerable
anxiety and distress. She still feels the effects today, both physically
and mentally. The appointment was made by telephone in a rapid manner so that she had difficulty in following what was being said. Your office’s initial approach was misleading. No mention of sales was made. Your company was not identified clearly so she was led to believe this would be an assessment of her needs following her recent grant of attendance allowance. The appointment was made for Friday 11th June. Thus both my time and hers was wasted in futile waiting. The time of the appointment, 1pm, was most inconvenient. This is the time most elderly people have their main meal of the day. As your representatives stayed for three hours, my mother had to delay her lunch until 4.30pm. |

HALES WOMEN'S INSTITUTE - JUNE - MEETING REPORT Forensic archaeologist and anthropologist Sarah Doxey gave members a
fascinating insight into her profession at the meeting of Hales Women's
Institute in June. Sarah was fortunate enough to study at a Military university
and has also been on a Time Team Special at Gosport in Hampshire, excavating
the old Haslar Naval Hospital. Pat Lovat from Aston and Willoughbridge W.I. represented the Rosamund Harris group, of which Hales is a part, at the A.G.M. in Cardiff. Pat voted on behalf of the group on this years resolution, the mandatory labeling of the country of origin of meat, poultry and fish. The resolution was passed by 99.3 in favour. Ann Fair hosted a summer picnic in her lovely garden, at very short notice. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended. Thank you Ann, for your hospitality. Hales members had another success at the County Show. Elizabeth Harrington gained a gold star for hand tied fishing flies. Silver stars went to Kath McClellan for her cheese and onion pasties and to Sylvia Boden for her sweet cicely fizz. Prim Heath and Pat Hall gained third prizes, Congratulations to all. Hales W.I. always welcomes new members. The meetings are the second Thursday of the month at 7.30 p.m. at the Hales Club. Why not come and find out all about us and make new friends. We run a comprehensive programme throughout the year. Contact numbers are 01630 653 416 and 01630 657 737 The next meeting is an visit to gardens at Whitmore, leaving Tower Lawns at 6.30 p.m. Food will be available. A.L.Gibbs. |

(A) SCAM ALERT - an email supposedly from a wealthy lady living abroad
A resident of Stoke on Trent has recently received an
email supposedly from a wealthy lady living abroad. According to the email,
she is dying of cancer and needs help to donate her wealth to various
charities, churches and to a nurse who has cared for her during her final
illness. The email asks that the recipient contacts the nurse, who lives
in the Ivory Coast, Africa, to arrange a bank transfer of some of the
funds into her account. If the recipient administers the money according
to the benefactor’s wishes, they would be able to retain 40% of
the funds for themselves. (B) SCAM ALERT - the old water board one about checking your water supply because of a serious leak nearby. Sadly one of the local PhoneLink clients has fallen victim to it and had a substantial amount of money stolen but what is worse they ‘stole’ her confidence and replaced it with fear and shame. She was sensible and said that the water board always phoned before they went and was told it was an emergency so they had not had time to phone! PhoneLink volunteers are, of course, supporting her through this very difficult time (she told one ‘you are good girls checking I’m alright’ but it is something that should never happen particularly to an 85 year old lady living alone. |
