Scientific Adviser - Friends of the Turner Hodgkiss Community Nature Reserve
We are seeking a voluntary Scientific Advisor for a recently established small nature reserve and would be grateful if you could circulate a copy of this note to appropriate people who have a ‘wild-life, natural history’ interest. The relevant information is set out below. The Turner Hodgkiss Community Nature Reserve was formed in the early part of 2009 as the result of a generous agreement by a local land owner, via a long term lease for an area of about an acre consisting of a small gulley and water body. This land is located at Hookgate (the Ashley-Loggerheads area) and has not been farmed or otherwise used for over 70 years. There is a group of Trustees as well as a body of volunteers associated with the management of the reserve, however we lack the necessary scientific foundation for some of the decisions which face us. For example, questions like ‘is it safe to introduce such and such, or is it safe to try to eliminate such and such species?’ would be much easier to make if we had access to someone with expertise in wildlife matters. This is why we are looking for someone to appoint as a voluntary Scientific Adviser to the Reserve. From our point of view a member of academic staff or an experienced research worker would be ideal, and further we would not anticipate the duties to be onerous. Additionally we would be predisposed to support any undergraduate investigative projects on the reserve if such opportunities arose. As a next step I am asking anyone with an interest in this role to contact me by E-mail to reserve@loggerheads.eu so that we can discuss the post and visit the site itself. |

Bogus Social Workers Reports have been received of possible bogus Social Workers operating in the Staffordshire area. Two females have been reported visiting a family in Staffordshire, claiming to be Social Workers and informing the parents that the purpose of their visit was to take their children into the care of Social Services. The parents of the children concerned sent the callers away and reported
the incident immediately however this has left them, understandably, extremely
upset and concerned. |

Trading Standards Officers are warning email users to be on their guard as global spam levels spike. A current spamming tactic appears to be the use of emails purporting to come from email system administrators. They will apparently be sent from accounts such as ‘postmaster@…’, ‘MAILER-DAEMON@…’, or from account names such as ‘Mail Delivery System’, ‘System Administrator’, ‘Postmaster’ or ‘Mail Delivery Subsystem’. Subject lines contain references such as, ‘Returned mail:Mailbox Full’, ‘failure notice’, ‘Undeliverable Mail Returned to Sender’, Delivery Notification (Failure)’. Some emails purport to be an ‘Out of office reply’. All of the said emails are spoof emails designed to trick the recipient
into believing that they are a genuine notification. In reality the email
is simply a social engineering attempt to dupe users into opening it and
then clicking on embedded Internet links (URLs) within. Such links will
likely point to websites containing malicious code that will attempt to
exploit vulnerabilities in the computer’s operating system. |

| DISTRACTION BURGLARY Staffordshire Police are warning residents to be on their guard after a repeat type of distraction burglary in Tamworth. Reports state that on each occasion the offender appeared at the door
holding a bloody hanky to his nose claiming to have been beaten up. One
resident felt sorry for the man and made him a cup of tea whilst the offender
was talking to her son. The offender asked her son to look out of the
window to see if his attackers where still around. While the man was looking
out of the window the offender took a purse from the house and ran. |

| SKY TV SCAM A clever two part scam has been reported by Sky TV customers; however this could happen with any subscription service, such as Virgin Media. The scam begins with a pre-recorded call asking if you are a Sky subscriber, if you state that you are the second part will take place a week later. The second call is from a live person claiming to be from the Sky billing department and they will claim that your Sky subscription for the month has not been paid. They will then state that unless you provide your credit card details your service will be suspended. Download full report |

| WARNING TO SHAREHOLDERS The Financial Services Authority is warning that many companies have become aware that their shareholders have received unsolicited phone calls or correspondence concerning investment matters. The contact is typically from overseas based ‘brokers’ who
target UK shareholders, offering to sell them worthless or high risk shares
in US or UK investments. These operations are known as ‘boiler rooms’
and the ‘brokers’ can be very persistent and extremely persuasive.
