Your Help Needed - Transport Planning in Staffordshire

Dear all - unfortunately this article could not be fitted into the next issue of "Community News"
A good transport network is vital to the future health and well being of Staffordshire. The County Council has lots of ideas about how it would like to see that network develop - they have put together a set of goals and challenges they would like to achieve to ensure Staffordshire’s transport network supports economic prosperity, safely connects communities in a manner that is environmentally sustainable, and which improves the quality of life for all residents. But they would really value your views on these goals and challenges.
They would like you to complete a questionnaire and, in return for ten minutes or so of your time, will enter you into a free prize draw. The first entry out of the hat will win £200, the second £100 and the third £50. The questionnaire is available at www.stack-up.info or by following the link on the County Council’s homepage. Your responses will make a difference to the way the Council maintains and manages the transport network. In particular, your responses will inform the development of the new Local Transport Plan for Staffordshire that will be published in 2011.
If you haven’t got access to the internet – don’t despair! Paper copies, together with pre-paid envelopes, are available from Loggerheads Community Information Shop or Loggerheads Library or ring 01630 674365.
The last date for entries is Friday 23rd October and the draw will take place on Wednesday 4th November.
Don’t forget to ask your family and friends to take part too. Thank you and Good Luck!

"Travel scheme to help the elderly"
By Winston Brown of The Market Drayton Advertiser

A new scheme to help elderly and disabled people in Loggerheads travel to and from medical appointments has, been launched.
The Loggerheads and District Vol¬untary Car Scheme started in August, and involves volunteer drivers who use their own vehicles to carry out bookings.
It is currently linked with a similar scheme in Madeley but organisers hope that enough volunteers will come forward to allow it to run separately.

Thank you - a Grateful Westie Owner, Loggerheads

I am Poppy, a 5 year old rehomed West Highland Terrier, who likes to run all over the place, and if I get the chance to beat Mum out of the front door.

I did this on Monday 07 Sep about 1000hrs. I ran out of the front door, into 2 gardens on the estate, then decided to sprint over the A53 in Loggerheads without a care for traffic or people into another garden. Mum came after me, carrying Betty the other rehomed West Highland Terrier, she tried to catch me but I ran away from her and headed along the A53 towards Ashley. Mum handed Betty to a nice man so she could run after me properly.
I ended up causing a lot of chaos and going under 2 cars, that really scared me. I would like to apologise for being a nuisance and causing the traffic to stop and to the driver whose car I went under, they were very kind and stopped to make sure I was okay. I am very sorry and promise that Mum will put together the new baby gate to keep me indoors when she opens the front door.'

I, being the owner of Poppy, really want to thank everyone who slowed down and stopped when Poppy ran along the road and then into the road on Monday morning. I apologise for allowing her to escape from me and am grateful she was not hurt or even worse killed. Thank you to the driver under whose car she went for being extremely careful and stopping. Poppy is 100% fine.

With reference to your item about the blue Ford Transit, R892 HUB.

This vehicle was in Eden Grove, Loggerheads at 14:15hrs, Sunday September 6th. There were four scumbags on board. One of them, a male about 60 years of age, 5'7" tall, thin build, grey swept back greasy hair, tattoes on both arms, dressed in blue jeans and a dark top rang my door bell. When I answered he offered me a tatty business card with a mobile phone number on it and said they were in the area offering a 'once a year gutter cleaning service'. Yeah, right!! I put him straight and assured him I do my own. He then produced a packet of tablets in a foil pack and asked me if he could have a glass of water to take his tablets with. I shut the door and fetched him the water and he did, indeed, take two tablets. He gave me the glass back and left, walking up Eden Grove towards Newcastle Road.

I do not know if he visited any other property's but shortly afterwards he got in the aforementioned Transit which had been parked at the junction of Eden Grove and Derwent Drive. The vehicle then drove up Eden Grove, turned around and then drove slowly down Eden Grove and into Derwent Drive where I lost sight of it

The vehicle had a set of ladders on the roof to try to add to its authenticity!

I get the impression that the scumbag was on the lookout for gullible people who would invite him into the house for the drink of water or, even more gullibly, offer him work

Old photographs of the Lordsley area

I wondered if it would be possible to ask in your newsletter whether anyone in the area has any information or old photographs of the Lordsley area, specifically around Hollycroft Farm/Cottage, where my husband and I live. I am trying to research the history of the house. I know that it belongs to the Marson family now and has done for some years, ( we are their tenants)but in the Congregational Chapel Churchyard in School Lane there is a Memorial headstone on one of the graves that is in memory of George & Ann Cork, and their daughter. George & Ann died in 1929 & 1925 respectively ,their daughter, Fanny Pennison, in 1977. On the headstone it says that they are of Holly Croft Villa, Lordsley, Ashley, but we have always known it either as Hollycroft Farm or Cottage, and indeed on the 1911 census when the Corks lived here it is recorded as Hollycroft Cottage....as it is also on the 1901 census. I am trying to find out why, when , how the name changed, and who actually built the house where it stands today, and when. I intend to visit the Stafford Archives to look at OS maps of the period, and anything else they may have, but thought that I would investigate the possibility of anyone in the area having any information to help in my quest.

Kind Regards,

Linda Rhead
