A serious fire incident in the Burntwood on Sunday 31 May

There was a further but more serious fire incident in the Burntwood on Sunday 31 May. This again was caused by youthful campers who, perhaps mindfull of all the publicity last time, set up camp much deeper in the woodland. Unfortunately the modus operandi of these miscreants is to have a large camp fire. On Sunday the fire's size and location under some pines could have set the woodland on fire. The matter will be pusued with the police and forestry people but it might be pertinen that if anyone spots a campers + fire in the woods to alert the fire brigade.

The Newcastle Young Citizens awards nomination process and event details

I have attached the poster and a copy of the nomination form with the details of the Newcastle Young Citizens awards nomination process and event details and would be grateful if you could publicise the event and encourage nominations for the Children & Young people of Newcastle (as described in the attachments). I have copied the press release issued by Cllr Mary Maxfield below which includes a link to the actual website where the nomination form can be completed online or printed off and completed and returned to the address indicated.

Children and young people who have gone the extra mile are to be rewarded for their efforts.

The first ever Newcastle-under-Lyme Young Citizens’ Awards will be presented to recognise and celebrate a wide range of achievements.

Organisers the Newcastle Children's Trust Board, part of the Newcastle Local Strategic Partnership, are now looking for nominations for young people aged four to 19.

The awards are for three age groups: four to 11-year-olds; 11 to 16-year-olds and 16 to 19-year-olds.

Residents are asked to nominate individuals or groups in the following categories: be healthy; stay safe; enjoy and achieve; make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being.

"We would like to hear about young unsung heroes who have given up their time for the good of their community," said Cllr. Mary Maxfield, Newcastle Borough Council Cabinet member for culture and active communities.

"Positive actions could include tackling issues such as bullying in schools and racism, supporting others, promoting healthy lifestyles and carrying out voluntary activities.

"If you know a young person who stands out from the crowd and has made a difference in the borough, please get in touch."

For further information call 01782 611033 or visit www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/youngcitizensaward

Closing date for nominations is 15 June and an awards evening will be held on 9 July at St. George's Church hall, Cherry Orchard, Newcastle.

WALKING THE DOG

A WOMAN was flying from Melbourne to Brisbane.

Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Sydney along the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes.

Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. The man had noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye Dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight.

He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her and calling her by name, said, 'Kathy, we are in Sydney for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?'

The blind lady replied, 'No thanks, but maybe Buddy would Like to stretch his legs.'

Picture this:

All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill, when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses.

People scattered.

They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!

True story...
