Wise Words by George Carlin
George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008)
was an American stand-up comedian. He was also an actor and author,
and he won five Grammy Awards for his comedy albums.
A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings
but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints.
We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families,
more conveniences, but less time.
We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge,
but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems,
more medicine, but less wellness.

Notice of AGM - Ashley Memorial Hall Tuesday 17th November

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual General Meeting of Ashley Memorial Hall for year ending 30th September 2009 will be held at Ashley Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 17th November 2009 to transact the following business.

Ashley House planning applications - The deadline for letters or emails of objection to reach the Council is 6th November

Simon writes "As a neighbour to Ashley House and one who was very involved in the previous 'SAFE' campaign to stop the expansion proposed in 2004, I and many others are very concerned about the new proposals for further building and car parking plus a 13' security fence, as per applications submitted last week.

Whilst it is recognised that local employment and new management at Care Principles may have an influence on people's acceptance of Ashley House, there is still a strong sense of the massive effort and strain sustained in the build up to the 2006 Appeal and that we should not readily give up all that was achieved in terms of preventing expansion even if apparently now being sought by 'creep'. There is also still a strong fear of who is inside the unit or the type that could be housed there in the future.

The main points of objection can be summarised as follows:

1. The proposed 13' fence will again raise the spectre of 'fear of crime' as it will be a constant visual reminder of the secure aspect of the site.

2. There is no current legal requirement for such a security measure (even though this is what Care Principles are saying) and no finalised plans to introduce one, at least none in the public domain.

3. The fence and new building would impact, in an unacceptable way, on the rural landscape for those with views of the site, and for local walkers and vehicles on the lanes.

4. The plans do represent an attempt at expansion 'by creep' which is an attempt to overturn all that was achieved by the massive local effort from 2004-6.

I don't think we have long in which to act, so your urgent consideration, as always, would be appreciated.

The deadline for letters or emails of objection to reach the Council is 6th November. For information, the planning application numbers are:

09/00558/FUL - building and car park
09/00557/FUL - fence
