Dog Aware! Booklet

Jacinta Phillips, a mother of 3 year old twins, was deeply concerned at the recent death of a baby caused by a dog at the grandmother’s house. This tragedy is one in series of such incidents where young children have been maimed or killed by domestic pets.

As an ex-kennel maid, she urged her local children’s centre to address the issue of responsible dog ownership in households where there is a baby or young child.

After consultation with a range of partners and experts, Jacinta has written an informative and helpful booklet, called Dog Aware.
The booklet has been printed with funding from Staffordshire County Council Community Watchdog, and it is being distributed widely for parents with young families. The booklet is full of helpful hints and useful information for pet ownership in a family setting and is available from the link below.

This is an inspirational story – a service user becomes a service provider – herself a mum, but on behalf of other families with small children. The process of producing the booklet has been a truly empowering exercise for the children’s centre parent.
