Staffordshire County Council says "Drivers urged to take extra care on roads this week"
Motorists are being urged to continue to take extra care on Staffordshire’s roads this week as cold weather continues.
The county council’s gritting teams are continuing to treat only A and B roads due to the national salt shortage. Stocks are running low but a further delivery of salt is expected midweek to top up the limited supplies at highways depots although the amount of salt Staffordshire will receive is not yet known.
Cabinet member for highways Mike Maryon said: “We are still treating the major routes only due to our limited salt supplies. “We’re hoping to receive deliveries on Wednesday which will allow us to continue as we have been for the last few weeks. "What salt is available is being allocated nationally and we are following Government requests to reduce our salt use. “I would like to remind people that they must drive with extreme care while the weather remains cold because even though the days are bright, there is a real danger of ice, particularly overnight and in the mornings. And drivers need to remember that icy patches can occur even on roads that have been gritted. “I’d also like to thank people for their patience during this long period of cold weather which has caused problems nationwide.” Tom Hobbins, Communications Officer (Media), Staffordshire County Council |

Staffordshire Cares: Community Wellbeing Fund – project examples We want to encourage parish councils and local community groups to think about how some funding could help develop innovative projects or extend existing ones which improve and maintain the health, independence and wellbeing of older and vulnerable people. Providing a range of local activities can really help older and vulnerable people stay healthy and active for longer meaning they can continue to live an independent life in a supportive community. Examples of projects we would be interested in funding are below but this is about innovation so anything which helps achieves the aims set out might could qualify… |

Funding opportunity for ‘grassroots’ support for vulnerable people I’m asking you to assist with ensuring community groups in the area you represent are aware of new funding which could help transform the way older and vulnerable people are supported in Staffordshire communities. As part of Staffordshire Cares, in November, I announced that £1million would be made available over the next four years to encourage smaller local organisations such as community volunteer groups, village halls, parish councils, local clubs and faith groups to provide support or services for older and vulnerable people. It is those groups at the most local level who know their place and its people better than anyone and I’m delighted that the first £250,000 of funding will be available from April 1st this year. The new scheme is called the ‘Community Wellbeing Fund’. It will enable groups to apply for either a small grant of up to £1000, or a larger grant of up to £10,000. |
